Chennai: A six-inch-long Buddha statue, believed to be from Mayanmar, was found near Kalpakkam shore on January 27, much to the amusement of the local residents.
The bronze statue, fitted in a plate, was found by the residents of Kalpakkam who immediately alerted the National Institute of Ocean Technology in Chennai. Two senior scientists were deputed to inspect the statue.
Dr P Sasisekaran, one of the scientists, told PTI that the statue was inside a bamboo box. Two cups, normally used for keeping flowers, were also found in the box.
Two monk ropes were also found along with the statue, he said.
Asked how he came to the conclusion that the statue might be from Myammar, he said there was some script, which looked like Burmese.
The statue might have been swept away by the tsunami from the coastal areas of Mayanmar. The Archeological Society of India had been informed of the finding, he said.
The statue was still kept in the Kalpakkam beach and a lot of people were thronging there to see it, he said.
Sitting in a vajra posture, the statue had been designed like Buddha, he said.
