CHENNAI: Two premier institutions administered by the Department of Atomic Energy - the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Energy (IGCAR) in Kalpakkam and the Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc) in Taramani, Chennai - will henceforth function as constituent units of the Homi Bhabha National Institute (Deemed University), Mumbai. A decision to grant deemed university status to the Homi Bhabha National Institute was approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC) at its last meeting in New Delhi recently. It has 10 constituent institutions, including the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in Trombay and the two Chennai institutions.
Reacting to the news, Institute of Mathematical Sciences Director R Balasubramanian said ‘‘as a research institute we would now be in a position to frame our own syllabus and offer courses that would be useful to the nation.’’ Courses will be offered in areas where there was a manpower requirement. Academic programmes on Cryptology and Scientific Computation could be devised, he said.
The Institute of Mathematical Sciences was founded in 1962 by Alladi Ramakrishnan as a national institution for fundamental research in Mathematical and Physical Sciences. At present, research carried out at the IMSc is supported by the Department of Atomic Energy and the Government of Tamil Nadu.
Every year, a select group of students are admitted at the Institute to pursue a PhD programme. The IMSc also hosts a large number of scientists at the post-doctoral level and supports a vibrant Visiting Scientist Scheme. Besides, it supports, through fellowships, a large number of post-doctoral fellows from all over the world who come to IMSc to work.
IGCAR: The Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, established in 1971, does not offer any academic programmes. It is engaged in broad-based multi-disciplinary programme of scientific research and advanced engineering directed towards the development of Fast Breeder Reactor technology.
