Here is the article from Newstoday.net
Kalpakkam, July 1:
Kalpakkam DAE Emergency Centre has proposed to conduct an off-site emergency exercise as part of its emergency preparedness plans along with the Madras Atomic Power Station and the district administration of Kancheepuram. The objective of the exercise is to check the preparedness of the district administration and the plant management in meeting remote emergency situations. The exercise will be conducted on 2 July in the villages falling under Sector B of Kalpakkam DAE centre, one of its emergency planning zones.

The off-site emergency exercise will be conducted jointly by the district administration of Kancheepuram headed by the Collector R Venkatesan and Kalpakkam DAE Emergency Centre headed by S Krishnamurthy, Station Director, Madras Atomic Power Station. The training programme for the exercise was inaugurated on 16 June at Kalpakkam by J Jayakanthan, DRO, Kancheepuram.

The exercise will be conducted as mentioned in the emergency manual of Kalpakkam DAE centre in three postulated grades of severity, a press release said.

The first stage is sheltering and requesting the residents in the affected areas to stay indoors with doors and windows closed and avoid food and water consumption from open sources.

The second stage is administering updated medicines to the affected to prevent the possible intake of radioactive iodine which might get released during such happenings.

The third is evacuation of the affected to a safe rallying post away from the affected place.

It is expected that the exercise would simulate a postulated accident scenario where the police and district officials would perform warning and advisory functions in 'affected villages' as part of the public awareness and emergency preparedness programme, the press release said here.
